Gold & Silver Decanter Awards
With winter in South Africa, comes the very exciting award season in the wine world. Every year we enter our wines into a few wine competitions that we believe to be the best in the world. We are excited to have received the results from the 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards (DWWA) and we are immensely proud to announce that the Constantia Glen FIVE 2020 has been awarded 95 points with a GOLD medal! This year’s DWWA had a total of 18,250 wines judged from 57 countries. Of that, 705 Gold medals and 5,568 silver medals were awarded. The Constantia Glen FIVE 2020 is one of 14 red wines in South Africa to proudly receive a gold medal.
The 2020 vintage was a profound vintage for us at Constantia Glen as a nationwide lockdown was instated two-thirds of the way through the harvest season. It was a serious team effort with everyone living on the farm helping out anywhere they could. It was incredible to see everyone come together, keeping spirits high and make the most of a really tough time. For those that were in the Cape for the lockdown period, you may remember the perfect weather we had in April 2020. It was perfect ‘braai’ (barbecue) weather almost every day and therefore also the perfect dry weather conditions for extended hang time in the vineyards which is amazing for slow ripening and flavour concentration in the grapes! We are so excited about this award as it is a truly great reflection of just how amazing the vintage was in all aspects.
In addition, we are delighted that our newly released Constantia Glen TWO 2021 has been awarded 93 points with a Silver medal in the 2023 Decanter World Wine Awards, and just two weeks prior, this wine received the same score from the 2023 International Wine Challenge (IWC).
